Greetings to all American Legion Auxiliary members.

We have now started the new Auxiliary year. We are aiming to make this an “It Is What We Make It” year! We will go back to monthly or maybe quarterly Auxiliary meetings. We will work hard to get every unit to 100% membership.

It makes me sad that the COVID lock downs and concerns caused so many of our units to stop meeting and gathering for projects. This has had a devastating effect on our units, our friendships, our veterans projects, and in some cases, a massive loss in memberships. I would like to ask each of you to remember why you joined the Auxiliary. Remember the veterans through whom you joined and let us get excited about what we can do to honor them. We have big things to accomplish for our veterans! Let’s never let them think or feel that we have forgotten them or our mission in supporting them. They are our purpose! They are our heroes! They are our heart! Let us stand up and wholeheartedly support them.

Most of the 2024 Fall District Meetings have been set. Let us all surprise our District President by showing up in large numbers to support them, to learn all that they have planned to teach us, to gather with old and new friends alike. It is so much fun to get together and talk about our units, our successes and maybe our challenges, our lives, our kids, and all those things friends love to talk about.  Your leadership teams are working hard to make the District meetings as informative and fun as possible. Please join us! See you there.

By the time we have our District meetings, all those who represented you at the 2024 National Convention in New Orleans will be back in North Dakota. Their heads will be full of new things they learned, fun things they experienced, and all the things they want to share with you. They will bring you ideas on how to excite your units, teach your members, and help you make your units run better than ever.

It is my greatest honor to serve you as your Department President this year. With God’s assistance, I will strive to lead with the best of my ability. With God on your team, who can be against you. Let us work together to make the Department of North Dakota a department we can be proud of. Let us work together to excite and inspire every unit to be the best it can be. Let us work together and make our 2024-2025 theme and purpose “It Is What We Make It.” Let us make it great!

Yours for our veterans.

Candace joined the Auxiliary as a junior member under the eligibility of her father, Harland Berg, a Vietnam veteran. During her years as a junior member, Candace served as the trumpet player (bugler) for Memorial Day programs until graduating from high school.

Candace is active with the York unit as well as the Devils Lake Neathery-Simenson VFW Auxiliary, having served as a flag bearer, unit secretary, unit chaplain, and several chairmanships.

Candace is also involved with Ramsey County 4-H, serving as the treasurer and a 4-H leader. She emphasizes community service projects with her group that are veteran-focused, such as learning the meaning of the US flag, flag folding, honoring businesses and homes who display the US flag, putting together veteran food and supply packages, and helping with veteran and patriotic holiday services.

Candace currently lives and works in Devils Lake and is the proud parent of 3 children and a menagerie of pets. She is a licensed foster care parent, and in her spare time she enjoys volunteering at White Horse Hill National Game Preserve, sketching, photography, genealogy, watching hockey, exploring nature, and spending time with loved ones.

Candace’s focus this year is to embrace the programs of the American Legion Auxiliary and meeting as many veterans as possible.

Deadline for Poppy Poster Contest: May 15, 2025

Poppy Order Form – Due November 1

The poppy program is alive and well in North Dakota. The Department of North Dakota distributed approximately 27,000 small and 1,800 large poppies this year. We also mailed poppies to three out-of-state units.

Our poppy assembly work nearly ground to a halt after the 2023 death of Alfred Steiger, a veteran and resident of the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND. Alfred assembled poppies for the Department of North Dakota for over 20 years. We estimate that in his time with us he assembled over 500,000 poppies. After some searching, the poppy committee was lucky enough to find a retired Auxiliary member to step in to help assemble poppies and several units have volunteered to assemble their own orders as well. The poppy committee reached out to Boy Scout troops who, along with their leaders, lent a hand as well.

Overall, the Poppy Program is well supported by units across the state of North Dakota and for some units serves as its main fundraiser to support our veterans programs.

Poppy Order Form– Due November 1st, 2024

Using the image and story of the Flanders Field poppy to educate people about the sacrifices of our military service members helps us raise awareness of the Legion Family and links us to our mission in the eyes of the public.

Local American Legion units shall sponsor contests in local schools.  If your school does not conduct activities related to poppies, other youth groups, including junior members, may participate under the direct supervision of the unit.

Other ideas to celebrate and promote the “Poppy” are distributing a bookmark or coloring book.

Reporting & Awards

Reporting

Essentially there are two types of reports: Narrative (your story, what was done in your own words) and Impact (hours spent, money donated).  Both types of reports should be submitted at the end of the year.

Year-End Report Forms

The impact numbers (hours volunteered or spent during projects, money donated, etc.) may be reported using these forms:

Forms for Unit Members

Using the calendar year indicated on the MEMBER Year-End Impact Numbers Report:

  • Each time you volunteer for your Unit, Church, or Community organization, track your volunteer hours and resources ($$$) spent using the ‘Tracking Form’. If you don’t know the exact amount of time, dates or ($$$) spent, use your best estimate.
  • Each month – Enter your hours and resources spent on the ‘American Legion Auxiliary Tracking Form-MEMBER’ sheet. This will help organize your volunteering into specific categories in preparation for your Unit President’s ‘Unit Year-End Impact Numbers Report’.
  • At the end of the Auxiliary (administrative) year – enter your ‘year-end totals’ on your ‘MEMBER Year-End Impact Numbers Report’ and give your forms to your Unit President.
  • DEADLINE: APRIL 1 – Submit your ‘Member Report’ to your Unit President.

Forms for Unit Presidents only

  • Make enough copies of the tracking forms for each of your Unit members. Ask each member to keep track of their volunteer hours and resources ($$$) spent.
  • Complete the ‘Unit Year-End Impact Numbers Report’ using the ‘Member Reports’ from each of your Unit members.
  • DEADLINE: APRIL 15 – Submit your ‘Unit Year-end Impact Numbers Report’ to your District President no later than April 15.

Contact information for District Presidents and Department Chairmen

Note to Unit Presidents – If your Unit hosts a special event such as a fundraiser for a specific veteran’s program or cause, ‘toot your horn’ and submit a Narrative Report (written as an article), along with pictures, video, identifying the participants, leaders, etc.  Don’t wait until the end of the year to do so…do it right away.  Submit your narrative reports to your District President, Department Chairmen, and the Department Office.

Note to Unit Presidents – Every Unit has a member who goes above and beyond what might be expected when doing work related to veterans and their community. They probably do not seek or may not receive many accolades for their efforts.  Think about who in your unit fits that description and nominate them for a  ‘Unit Member of the Year’ award.  Forms are available at the bottom of this webpage.

Send your unit’s nomination for 2024 Unit Member of the Year Application no later than May 1 to:

Heidi Wakefield, Department Leadership Chairman (Contact List)

Forms for District Presidents Only

  • ‘DISTRICT/COUNTY Year-End Impact Numbers Report’ Form. This form is for District Presidents only to track their units.  Compile unit forms and report to the Department Chairmen, Department President and Department Secretary.  Year-end reporting is Due by May 1st to the Department Office.
  • Also available as a Word or Excel file at www.ALAforVeterans.org
  • The Department Office will email a copy of your District report with narratives to each of the Department Chairmen.
  • NARRATIVE FORM 2024

Contact information for District Presidents and Department Chairmen

  • DEADLINE: MAY 1 – Submit your ‘DISTRICT/COUNTY Year-End Impact Numbers Report’ to submit one copy to the Department Office.
  • Note to District Presidents – Your Impact Reports will be compiled for submittal by the Department Office to National Headquarters and inclusion in the Department Convention Report.  Please remember to forward unit narrative reports to the Department Office or write up your own narrative report including these unit activities.

  • Note to Department Chairmen – Remember to submit outstanding Units and Unit Members for Department and National recognition.

 Awards

There are many awards available. To receive an award, units and members need to apply for them. Submitting a report does not mean the unit/member is also applying for an award.  The National website has awards listings available at Forms.  Please also check with specific Department Program Chairmen if you wish to apply for an award.  They will help you get items submitted to the National office.

Convention Speaker Puts Fargo VA Program on the Map

Audrey Beauchesne, Representative of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) -Fargo, was a guest speaker at the 2024 Department Convention held in Bismarck in June. The story Audrey shared with our Auxiliary members deeply touched those members in attendance. Her story also drew the attention of her supervisor who in turn sent it to Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough in Washington, DC.

Audrey recently returned from the VA’s Military Sexual Trauma Symposium held in Nashville, TN. VA teams who work with the VA’s Military Sexual Trauma programs across the country were invited to attend the symposium to learn and share experiences.

It was at the Symposium’s dinner on Tuesday, July 30, that Audrey and two other VA representatives from other states were recognized for their work with the VA’s Military Sexual Trauma program. Their stories were shared by Secretary McDonough in his speech to the event attendees. Audrey’s story put the Fargo VA’s Military Sexual Trauma program on the map.

Thank you, Audrey, for sharing your story as an example of the excellent work the VA is doing for all of our military veterans.

This year our theme for membership was the North Dakota Great Buffalo Roundup for Membership.

We have struggled greatly with trying to get our units to 100% renewal. We do have 14 units at 100% or more, 34 in the 90% range, and 38 in the 80% range. Of those in the 80-90% range, 13 lack just 1 renewal, and 20 lack just 2 to 4 renewals. We are working to get those in to push their units to 100%. There are quite a few more that lack just 5 to 8 renewals. I know we can get our numbers up, but it is taking longer than I expected. We are making calls to the units, getting more of them on ALA MIS so that the process can be easier and faster, and working to get as close to 100% as possible.

We are excited by National’s new system of goal setting and are sure we can do a better job of getting our Membership up to 100% in 2025.

The American Legion Auxiliary believes that the more knowledge our young people gain, the better citizens they will become. That is why the organization is so committed to education. Investing in the education of our young people is investing in the future of our country.

Time and again we hear about the difference an American Legion Auxiliary scholarship has made in a person’s life, providing unimagined experiences and opening up a world of opportunities. The Auxiliary supports a number of scholarship programs that benefit veterans, the children of our veterans, and the members of the organizations within The American Legion Family.
