May is here and that means scholarship judging. Thank you to Erin Wood, Lake Region State College Public Information Officer and Dawn Johnson, Instructional Coach for Northeast Education Services Cooperative for judging Department and National scholarships.
Congratulations to the winning students and to all who applied for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to academics and their communities. Every applicant was worthy of the scholarships.
Reminder to this year’s Girls State and Boys State attendees: the Samsung American Legion Scholarship is due the first day of the program using an online application. Direct descendants of a wartime veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion should check out www.legion.org/scholarships/samsung to be ready with the information needed to apply.
Thank you to everyone who supported our youth, education personnel, schools and the units who reported activities to help me complete my year-end report for Northwestern Division (report available in bulleted list further down this page).
Start planning for “Ten for Education” so you’re off to a head start for next year’s Education Program. Each and every one of you truly make a difference!

The following scholarships are available:
Department Scholarships:
2027 Department of ND Education Program Scholarship for disbursement during 2027-2028 academic year
This scholarship application is due by April 1st, 2027. It is awarded to worthy applicants that attend a college, university or trade school in North Dakota. Affiliation with the American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary is not required. The $500 award is paid out by March 1, 2028, to the school of choice after the applicant can verify enrollment and satisfactory academic progress.

2027 Nursing Scholarship application for disbursement during the 2027-2028 academic year
This scholarship application packet is due by April 1st, 2027, and is paid out during the spring of 2028. It is awarded to a worthy applicant that is pursuing a degree in the nursing field. Affiliation with a veteran is required. Affiliation with the North Dakota American Legion family is required in some cases. The scholarship award is in the amount of $500.

2027 Dr. Grace Holmes, MD, Nursing Scholarship application for disbursement during the 2027-2028 academic year
Proceeds from the sale of Dr. Holmes book ‘North Dakota Nurses Over There, 1917-1919’ are being used for the $1,000 scholarship to worthy applicants pursuing a degree in the nursing field. Due date is April 1st, 2027, and the scholarship money will be disbursed in the spring of 2027. Affiliation with a veteran is required. Affiliation with the North Dakota American Legion family is required in some cases.
