If you value patriotism, responsible citizenship, volunteerism and advocacy for veterans, the military and their families, you will feel right at home in the American Legion Auxiliary. You can educate school children about our nation’s flag, assemble care packages to send to our troops, or volunteer at your local VA Medical Center. As a member of a local Auxiliary unit, you’ll have a ready-made support system and many hands-on opportunities to serve in ways that truly make a difference.
Who We Are
We are the over 700,000 wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, granddaughters and descendants of veterans who served our great country during times of war. Some of us are veterans ourselves. Patriotism and veterans advocacy are so important to the American Legion Auxiliary that for nearly a century, we’ve been serving, educating and giving to America’s finest—our servicemen and women. We answer the call of Service Not Self.
Our members do incredible work! On average, each year, they…
- Help nearly 3 million veterans and volunteer 9.3 million hours to support veterans’ programs
- Contribute $36 million towards veterans and military families
- Contribute more than $2 million to programs benefitting children and youth
- Volunteer 630,000 hours for active duty military
We, in the American Legion Auxiliary, have a dream that some might say is impossible. We need a team to help us reach our goal. We need our National, Department, District, County, and Unit leaders on our team. But most important, we need our unit members to complete the team and to help us reach the dream of one million members by our centennial year. In my humble opinion, God is also counting on us to become one million members strong to be on His team to keep our religious freedoms as promised in the Bill of Rights. Together, with God’s help, we will be able to continue to support our veterans, our military, and their families while educating our children and our communities about the need for “Faith, Family, and Freedom.”
Remember if every member recruits and/or rejoins just one member this year we can turn the membership slide around in just one year. Have you gotten your one member this year? Please encourage your Units to think of it this way and let’s get the membership moving up! Is the reason we are not retaining members due to us just ‘scanning’ over them? Every new member should know that we are glad to have them join us. A smile and a complement can go a long way to maintain enthusiasm! Find the niche that interests a new member and let them run with some new ideas for your unit. Make them feel needed and they will stick around.
American Legion Auxiliary members have volunteered more than 9.3 million hours for a collective value of service to our veterans, servicemembers, and their families of more than $2.1 billion. That’s quite a global impact, and a powerful number that accentuates who we are, what we do, and why we matter!
