Salute to Servicemembers Online Only FormDue June 1

The American Legion Auxiliary National Security Program includes supporting not only our veterans but active-duty military members and their families as well. Your unit can be involved and support them in many ways including: providing occasional childcare for a military family, lending a listening ear, or hosting a send-off or welcome-home event.

Auxiliary members can be trained to act in emergency response in times of disaster, such as floods, tornadoes, winter storms and even man-made disasters. Perhaps your unit could sponsor a community blood drive or assist a homeless veteran in some way. Cards and letters would be welcomed by deployed troops assuring them that you are thinking and praying for them.

Beverly Wolff (Past Chairman)

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) is a national grant assistance program that provides temporary emergency help to eligible members of the American Legion Auxiliary who have suffered a significant financial setback as the result of an act of nature or other personal crisis.

The AEF was established in 1969 with a bequest from the estate of Auxiliary member Helen Colby Small of Burlington, Wisconsin. It continues today solely through generous donations from Auxiliary members.

Want to learn more about AEF? This Auxiliary Emergency Fund brochure includes helpful information about the program, such as the program objectives, guidelines on who is eligible to get funds from the Auxiliary Emergency Fund, and information and ideas on what units can do to support the fund.

When a sudden emergency strikes a friend, we all start thinking of how we can assist that person.  Well, it is the same for the American Legion Auxiliary family.  The Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) provides temporary financial assistance to eligible members during times of financial crisis or weather-related emergencies and natural disasters.  If you or another Auxiliary member you know is in a crisis situation, please contact me at aef@ndala.org.

Hello District 9 Auxiliary Members!

It was great to see you at the 2024 Department Convention in Bismarck where we had four District 9 units represented. Let us make it a goal to have each of our 12 units represented next time. It would be great to have at least one person from each unit at both the Winter Conference in January and the 2025 Department Convention next June. We can do it!

LoAnn Dick and her husband brought their soft-side hyperbaric chamber to Department Convention so our veterans and spouses could get more information about mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat wounds and other medical conditions by supplying oxygen in a pressurized environment. Several attendees experienced the benefits and said that they felt well-rested at the end of their time in the chamber. One of President LoAnn’s goals is that each American Legion Post would have a hyperbaric chamber for veterans and families to use. What a benefit that would be to the health of our veterans and families.

A Homecoming Event for Department Commander Mamie Havelka and Department President LoAnn Dick will be held on September 28 at the Bismarck Amvets Club.

May God bless you and our American Legion Family.

I recently attended the annual organizational meeting in Jamestown where we learned information to pass on to you.

Membership chairmen, send those 2024 dues in as soon as possible and start collecting and sending in 2025 dues. Don’t let your unit have a goose egg as we enter into Fall. Contact your former members and continue to recruit new members. Sign up those granddaughters and great-granddaughters, too. Do not hold memberships. Send dues in as soon as you receive them. National Headquarters will mail reminders on September 15, 2024, to all members who have not yet paid 2025 dues. Let’s work toward being a ‘Goal’ District in 2025!

Annette Zeller - Vice President

Annette Zeller – Vice President

The Department is trying to get more information to individual members by using an email platform called Constant Contact. I want to remind all members to update your mailing addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses when sending in your dues. Chairmen, please update the information in ALAMIS (American Legion Auxiliary Management Information System) or send to the Department Office to update.

Districts 5 and 7 will meet together in Bismarck for the 2024 Fall District Meeting. Make plans to attend. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Department Commander Mamie Havelka and Department President LoAnn Dick are planning a joint “Homecoming” event for Saturday, September 28, 2024. Make plans to attend. See you there!

God Bless our veterans and God Bless our Auxiliary members.

Unit Member of the Year Application – Due May 1

The ‘Unit Member of the Year’ award recognizes members of our units who exemplify the value and ideals of the American Legion Auxiliary. Those members work hard to support their units, improve the unit’s programs, and have a positive impact on our communities.

Look for that special member in your unit that exemplifies those ideals and has not held an office higher than Unit President. Then, nominate them for the ‘Unit Member of the Year’ award.

Wouldn’t it be great if we received a nomination from every District in our state?  ‘Unit Member of the Year’ nominations are due to me no later than May 1, 2025.

Have you heard about the ALA Academy? This is an incredible educational opportunity for you to learn about the Auxiliary and what we do. There are 8 main courses and many other live courses available to help mentor our newest members. I personally have completed 4 of them and I was amazed at the history of our program and the amazing individuals that made it all happen. This is a great opportunity for our Junior members to learn about the Auxiliary as well. They are the future of our program. There are even some E-courses designed specifically with our juniors in mind. You can enroll in any of the self-paced courses. I encourage everyone to try them. You will not be disappointed!

Lastly, how can you get our Junior members involved in your units? In a recent Zoom leadership meeting, we discussed the importance of mentoring our Junior members and involving them in our monthly meetings, fundraising events, preparing meals, and assisting in planning events and activities. Your juniors will amaze you with their use of technology and social media. Ask them to help with public relations and advertising your events. Juniors are our future, get them involved now. Get a few juniors excited to join our organization and they will reach out to others to help grow our membership.

Visit www.ALAforVeterans.org to learn what others are doing to involve their juniors and to familiarize yourself about programs designed for them.

Leadership Chairman

2025 Unit Member of the Year Application

Sparrow Wins 2024 Unit Member of the Year

James Roberts Unit #124 of McClusky proudly and enthusiastically nominated Deb Sparrow for the 2024 American Legon Auxiliary Unit Member of the Year. At Department Convention, Past Presidents Parley Chairman Sharon White Bear presented a gift card and certificate to Unit 124 President Lynn Helm on behalf of Deb, who was unable to attend. Deb’s dedication to our veterans and her service were celebrated by the McClusky unit.

In their nomination, unit members described Deb as one who exemplifies the values and ideals of the Auxiliary to the utmost degree. Her impact on the program of work in the McClusky unit is without measure.

Deb further shows dedication to her community by playing organ and supporting other church projects. Deb has served on election boards and, of course, votes as is her duty as a citizen. Veterans are always on Deb’s mind when doing activities with the Auxiliary. Honesty, dependability, and responsibility are all character traits of Deb. She is respectful to all she encounters. Along with all these characteristics, Deb is a retired school speech therapist, who served children in three schools for several decades. Finally, Deb is a dedicated wife of a rancher/farmer and is an enthusiastic supporter of her children and grandchildren as well.

Deb Sparrow has held several local unit offices including secretary, historian, public relations chair, and most importantly, junior leader. With the support of our unit, she was the member responsible for the revitalization of our Junior Auxiliary. While we have always had Junior members, the group had not been active for many years. Several years ago, Deb restarted the program and gave it new energy. The Junior members have been a vital part of our program activities since then because of Deb’s leadership and encouragement. She has taught our young members patriotism by example and the Junior members have responded to this with enthusiasm. Members of the McClusky unit are proud of and grateful for Deb’s contributions to her family, community, veterans, and our unit.

My experience serving not only as Department Secretary, but as co-editor of our Department’s quarterly publication ‘The Message’ and Department Public Relations Chairman has given me an insight into the workings of many of our most active units.

I have received numerous articles along with countless photos submitted by unit presidents and members-at-large from across the state of North Dakota. Those articles include the dates and times of unit activities submitted for publication in our Department newspaper as well as the names of those in photos. Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, we are unable to publish all of the photos and articles received, however, the editing team utilizes as many as possible.

Some unit presidents and members also use social media such as Facebook to publish their pictures and activities and make announcement for upcoming events. This will be the trend going into the future.

Newspapers and I mean those that used to be found in the local diners or purchased at a local grocery store are becoming a rarity in the state of North Dakota. Units with access to local hometown newspapers regularly submit articles and pictures of American Legion Family events held in their communities. Americans today live such a fast-paced lifestyle that we sometimes forget how it feels to be part of a community and simply gather for camaraderie and fun. The pictures and articles that are shared with me show that age does not matter. Young and old gather to enjoy meals together, play bingo, participate in flag burning ceremonies, distribute poppies, march in parades, and participate in Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs.

I am so proud of Auxiliary units and members who take the time to record, photograph the activities, and author these wonderful little articles. It is nice to know that the American Legion Auxiliary as an organization is recognized and continues to remain relevant in North Dakota.

District Meetings

Hello District 4 Units.

The 2024 Winter Conference was informative, and I learned a lot. We ended up postponing our Spring District 4 meeting because of weather from March to April. At our rescheduled Spring meeting, we invited some of the staff from The Service Dogs for America to speak. They brought two service dogs with them: Dolly, a 1-year-old black Lab and Major, an older rescue mixed breed. Ryan is the owner and partner to Major who is trained for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). We were informed that dogs pick their people, which is amazing in itself. We want to thank Vickie, Ryan & Major, and Zoey & Dolly for coming to our meeting. There were a lot of questions and information shared. District 4 collected funds to donate to the Service Dogs program and I encourage you keep them in mind when you do your yearly budget. They invited us to visit their training facility in Jud, ND.

Our second guest was Department President Gloria Covert. She reminded us that April was Military Children and Purple Up Day and National Poppy Day is Friday, May 24th. Gloria wants us to be aware of the Legislature bills pertaining to veterans. The first Friday of each month is “Be the One.” She also encourages units to sign up for American Legion Auxiliary Management Information System (ALAMIS) access as a tool to maintain your membership. LoAnn Dick, Department Membership Chairman and President-Elect, joined Gloria at our Spring meeting and stressed the importance of your Auxiliary membership.

District Vice President Gail Marsolek and I were nominated to serve as your District Officers for 2024-2026. We are hoping to visit all units in District 4 in the upcoming months.

God Bless our veterans.
