Hankinson Unit 88
It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This!
On Thursday, July 31st, Eberhard Post and Unit 88 hosted several residents of the Lisbon Veteans Home at our beautiful Legion site located on the shores of Lake Elsie near Hankinson. All branches of our military were in attendance. Glorious!
Our guests arrived around 10:30 am and enjoyed some fellowship and drinks. Included in the price of admission (it really was all free) was a guided tour of the site. Guests were seated on a trailer pulled by two of our very own Legionnaires, Quentin Larson and Harry Emdee. Tour guide was Anne Biewer, member of Unit 88, who has spent countless hours at the site teaching students from the local school the beauty of nature and growing their own produce. The grounds are maintained by volunteers who put in many hours of upkeep and it shows. There is also a huge pentagon shaped building that has walls of plaques with the names of our servicemen on them. A wall of remembrance.
Once the group returned to the facilities, they were served a picnic meal of grilled burgers and hot dogs, prepared by Legion and Auxiliary volunteers. Shala Krump, Unit 88 President, welcomed everyone and introduced our speakers. Everyone enjoyed hearing the veterans stories, including those of our oldest veteran, Del, who will soon turn 102.
We are planning to promote the Hankinson Veterans Memorial Park so this event will become an annual gathering with other posts, units and the public welcome to visit this beautiful facility. We could not have chosen a better day to honor our vets.
