Hankinson Unit ‘Steps Up’
To make the beautiful Veterans Memorial site located on the shores of Lake Elsie near Hankinson even more beautiful, members of Eberhard Unit 88 of Hankinson spent a spring day planting. They potted nearly twenty-five planters using flowers and plants donated by an Auxiliary member and also purchased with funding from a Thrivent grant shared with the Hankinson High School FFA program.
We love seeing this special site continue to evolve each year as Legion and Auxiliary members invest their time and sweat equity into maintaining this beautiful memorial dedicated to our veterans. In addition to the memorial grounds, there is a community garden planted and cared for by Legion member Arnie Althoff and his wife, Charlene. They often partner with Auxiliary member Anne Biewer, who spends countless hours tending the gardens, watering, and weeding. The fruits of their labor are available for everyone in the community to enjoy. Volunteers are always welcome to help maintain the gardens and memorial grounds.
The Veterans Memorial is also available to rent for events and gatherings by anyone in the community and surrounding areas. Throughout the year, the Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons of the Legion host a variety of events at the site, including special afternoons of fellowship and food for residents traveling from the Lisbon Veterans Home.
